Tibet - Political

Tibet came under China's control in 1951 when Chinese troops aided an uprising of the poorer Tibetans. In 1959, both the poorer factions and the wealthy rose up but were put down by Chinese troops. At this time the Dalai Lama who was traditionally the political and religious leader left Tibet for India where he lives today. Tibet continues to be overwhelmingly practicing Buddhists. Over the years there have been demonstrations and other issues sometimes resulting in China closing the border.
It is interesting to see the checkpoints and abundance of Chinese flags, seemingly making a statement. The two flags are on every street light pole on the main street as you enter Lhasa and the rooftop of the famous Jokhang temple sports a Chinese flag on the roof.
